Nutrition is very limited. Children have but a stalk of sugar cane to chew as their meal. During the past ravaging hurricanes and floods, “mud cookies” were the alternative. Dirt was the meal. Since the earthquake hit, the essential basics again are a commodity.
Agriculture is primitive and people are suffering. Malnutrition, diarrhea, and infections are killing generations.
Ecole Mary Austen offers one meal a day which makes a noticeable difference and encourages attendance.
More than ever, nutrition centers become practical and are critical in the country. MIA needs support to establish a sustainable Haut St. Marc Nutrition Center.
